Star Fall

Title of Learning Object: Reading on Star Fall!

Subject: Language Arts

Grade Level: 1

URL: www.starfall.com

Description of Learning Object: You can go to the link above and you will find various interactive Language Arts activities for grade one students. The site is mostly centered towards learning how to read. Students are able to pick a story and click on the words to sound out and read the story.

Description: I would use this in my grade one class to practice their reading skills. There are various little games and activities for the students to practice sounding out words, reading shorts stories, understanding vowels etc. They would be given between 20-30 minutes on Star Fall. I would have the students type in the URL to practice their typing skills and then they would be able to pick any game from the site. I would monitor the students to make sure they are focused and on task. I have seen grade one’s work on this site and the engagement is great!

Planning and Prep: I would view all links and watch all the video available from the star fall website. I would make sure all of the student computers had the necessary software to view the links. There would have to be enough computers for all the children as this should be an independent activity. I would test the site with student computers before the class to make sure there were no glitches!

GLO: Students will listen, speak, read, write, view and represent to comprehend and respond personally and critically to oral, print and other media texts.

SLO: use knowledge of context, pictures, letters, words, sentences, predictable patterns and rhymes in a variety of oral, print and other media texts to construct and confirm meaning

ICT Outcomes:

C1: Students will access, use and communicate information from a variety of technologies.
1.1 access and retrieve appropriate information from electronic sources for a specific
inquiry

F3 Students will demonstrate a moral and ethical approach to the use of technology.
1.1 demonstrate courtesy and follow classroom procedures when making appropriate use of computer technologies.
